Faster information !

24/01/2012

We’re always busy here at the Third Chamber .. mainly drinking tea and working with our partners to see how to save personal effort !

With that in mind, we’ve been trying a nice new tool from ifttt.com – and we like it .. we like it a lot!

If you use social media and want some form of automation, then ifttt.com will help you achieve it.  It’s still in beta and has some limitations, which we have been assured are being addressed as we speak, but we strongly recommend it.

This has meant we can keep you up to date with bills and committees that the Third Chamber think are relevant.

Finally IR35 under review ..

19/03/2011

In 1997 Dawn Primarolo introduced, what many in the IT Contracting industry felt, was flawed regulations for so-called “service companies”.

This was at the same time that federal authorities were repealing similar legislation in the USA.  A MASSIVE movement of technical talent left the UK and for the remaining IT Contractors, they had the burden of unjust “meddling” into their affairs.

Now the Office of Tax Simplification have announced they have looked at this regime and suggested changes to the Chancellor  http://www.theyworkforyou.com/wms/?id=2011-03-10a.71WS.3 and http://hm-treasury.gov.uk/ots_press_10032011.htm

Hopefully, this woefully inept piece of tax burden will be removed in the Budget on 23 March 2011 – http://hm-treasury.gov.uk/2011budget.htm

Security Warning – Anyone may be able to obtain your email address from Facebook !

17/03/2010

Do you have an account with Facebook ?

Have you changed your Privacy Settings for Contact Information ( http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy&section=contact ) to stop people getting your email address?

We use a number of providers for email services, to protect our “name”, including Google, Microsoft and Yahoo too …

Unless you have protected your email address within the Privacy Settings on Facebook, anyone importing contacts to Yahoo will get a list of these email addresses into their Yahoo Contacts!

Within Facebook, we have a number of “Friend Lists” setup, including what we call “9 Limited” – most new “friends” are added to this list when we respond to a friend request within Facebook, just until we know who they are.  In the Privacy Settings, we do not allow people to see certain things – like phone numbers and email addresses – by including the “9 Limited” list in the “except:” boxes.

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU TO CREATE A SIMILAR “LIMITED” FRIENDS LIST, ADD UNKNOWN CONNECTIONS (WHICH INCLUDES FRIENDS, APPLICATIONS AND PAGES) AND CHANGE YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS TO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO VIEW YOUR PRIVATE CONTACT INFORMATION e.g. EMAIL ADDRESS OR MOBILE NUMBER.

Once we found this out, we did a small test and found that we could get 90% of email addresses for our friends on Facebook !! We’ve deleted the downloaded contact records.
